Engineered Independently

Daphnis is an independent long-term emulator engineering project dedicated to understanding and accurately recreating the Sega Saturn architecture.

Our Engineering Methodology

The project began with a singular conviction: the intricacies of the Sega Saturn—long considered one of the most notoriously difficult home console systems to emulate faithfully—can best be solved through modern language safety, deterministic architectural isolation, and exhaustive study of original documentation.

Rather than importing historical hacks or copying implementation strategies from legacy emulators, Daphnis adopts a cleanroom approach:

1. Primary Sources as Authority

Official Hitachi hardware manuals for the SH7604 processor and Sega OEM technical specifications govern register definitions, bus protocols, and wait-state interactions.

2. Authentic Behavioral Evidence

Execution of the authentic European retail Sega Saturn BIOS serves as primary behavioral evidence. Other existing emulators are referenced solely for independent behavioral corroboration, never for source copying.

3. No Fabricated Progress

Daphnis does not patch game binaries or simulate high-level function calls to artificially bypass hardware handshakes. Guest software must execute naturally according to the hardware state machine.

4. Storage-Agnostic Media

The CD Block emulation operates via an abstract DiscImage interface. Physical sector acquisition, FAD calculation, and ISO 9660 decoding remain strictly segregated from host file primitives.

Project Scope & Target Software

Initial development milestones target stable BIOS execution followed by the natural disc acquisition and boot handoff for benchmark commercial titles, including Earthworm Jim 2 (PAL). At present, the project is under active development and has not yet achieved interactive gameplay execution.
